![]() ![]() Elevation contours are imaginary lines connecting points having the same elevation on the surface of the land above or below a reference surface, which is usually mean sea level. Topographic maps use elevation contour lines to show the shape of the Earth’s surface. Each map sheet measures about 22″ x 27″ although without the border, the ground area on each sheet occupies about 17″ x 23″. For example, it takes 20 quads to cover all of Richland County. There are 1,154 “quads” covering the entire state of Wisconsin.
